Project history: Built under the First
Naval Shipbuilding program for 1926-1931. Intended for escorting of battleships,
torpedo attacks, patrol service and anti-submarine
warfare. Presence of torpedo armament has been urged to indemnify partly
shortage of destroyers in the Soviet Navy. Actually Uragan class ships were torpedo boats and
so were registered by Jane`s. Ships were built in three slightly differing series.
Because of the limited dimensions ships appeared low seaworthy, besides, actually had no reserve of displacement for subsequent
modernizations. Trials revealed designed machinery power shortage (5700hp instead of 6850),
and, as consequence, designed 29kts speed has not been reached by any ship of a
series. Generally it was limited by 24-26kts, and to beginning of war it was even more moderated because of deterioration of
machinery. Two ships of IV series had 100mm/56
guns instead of 102mm/60.
Modernizations: 1934, Uragan, Tayfun, Smerch, Tsiklon, Groza, Vikhr`, Shtorm, Shkval: + 4 x 1 - 45/43 21K

Naval service: Sneg and Tsiklon were lost 28.8.1941 on German mines en route from Tallinn to Kronshtadt. Vikhr` 22.9.1941 was sunk by German aircraft at Kronstadt; in 1943 she was raised, repaired and in 1945 commissioned again. Burya was lost 24.8.1942 on mines at island Lavensaari. Purga 1.9.1942 was sunk by German aircraft at Osinovets (Lake Ladoga).
