Project history: Designation changed from small ASW ship (PLK) to guard ship (SKR) 19.5.1966.

These were the first Soviet warships specially designated as ASW units. Like Project 61, they were developed under the 1956 directive. The first large Soviet gas turbine combatant, Project 159 was powered by a pair of M-2s plus a diesel. Project 35 was a similar hull in which a pair of jet engines in raised spaces exhausting directly aft rather than geared to propeller shafts.

Modernizations: 1964, PLK-5; 1968, SKR-30; 1974, SKR-46; 1977, SKR-23; 1979, SKR-22; 1980, SKR-33; 1981, SKR-26, SKR-43; 1987, SKR-38 - under Project 159M: 1040/1180t, 82.3x9.20x3.01(6.04)m; - 2 x 16 RBU-2500 ASWRL, 1 DCR, Fut-N radar (on some); + MR-302 Rubka radar (on some instead of Fut-N), MG-325 Vega sonar (VDS), MI-110K wake detector (on some)

1966, SKR-40 - under Project 159AB: - 1 x 2 - 76/59, 2 x 16 RBU-2500 ASWRL; + MG-325 Vega sonar (VDS)

1970, SKR-23, SKR-46, SKR-33: - 1 x 5 - 400 TT

1970s, some Project 159A: - 1 x 5 - 400 TT; + MG-325 Vega sonar (VDS)
