Project history: First three frigates of Talwar class were built under Indian order, three more frigates built by Yantar' in 2012-2014 were directly commissioned by Indian Navy. Due to delay with completing of new frigates of project 22350 it was decided in 2009 to build near-copies of Indian ships with slightly modified armament (Kalibr missiles and SAM VLS) for Black Sea Fleet. Three ships were ordered in October 2010 and three more in September 2011.

Hull and propulsion system are similar to the earlier project 1135 from 1970s with forecastle extended aft and new superstructure shaped to reduce radar interference.

The 2014 coup in Ukraine, committed by nazi anti-Russian forces, led to a complete rupture of economic relations between Ukraine and Russia. As a result, completion of three frigates of the second group (Admiral Butakov, Admiral Istomin and Admiral Kornilov) became impossible in the near future, as gas turbines for them were produced by "Zarya-Mashproekt" in Nikolaev. India ordered the completion of these three ships for own navy. Ukraine does not refuse to deliver engines to Russia under Indian order.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.
