Project history: These ships are in effect Soviet equivalents of the US Spruance. They are designed to act as ASW flotilla leaders, presumably working with frigates. In effect they are Project 1134B successors with paired helicopters aft and without area defence missiles (their Kinzhal SAMs are, in effect, Osa successors).

The new Kinzhal apparently encountered problems. As of 1992, the first two ships still lacked both missile launchers and directors. The third had launchers but no directors. The fourth. Admiral Zakharov, was the first to have the full system, including two directors (one of which was later removed for titling to another ship). The next two ships had only single directors; the first to retain both directors was Simferopol.

Later ships were ordered to a modified 1155.1 design, with a single 130mm mount forward, an RBU-12000, two Kortik CIWS, and two quadruple Moskit SSM mounts.

Planned modernization of Marshal Shaposhnikov will include installing of 2 quadruple canisters for Uran SSM and replacing MR-123 Vympel-2 radars by MR-123-02/3 Bagira, MR-760 Fregat-MA by MR-710 Fregat-M, older ECM equipment by TK-25-2 ECM suite and installing of new 5P-30N2 Fregat-N2 radar.

Modernizations: 1991, Admiral Tributs: - 1 MR-2122/201-1 Vaygach-U radar; + 4 x 1 Kinzhal SAM VLS (32 9M330), MR-350A Podkat, 3R-95, MR-212/201 Nayada-5 radars, 2x MP-401 Start ECM suites

1992, Admiral Vinogradov, Admiral Tributs: + 4 x 2 - 12.7/79 (temporarily, later removed)

2000, Severomorsk: + 2x MP-401 Start ECM suites

2009, Admiral Tributs: -2x MR-123 Vympel-A radars; + 2x MR-123-02/3 Bagira radars

2010, Vitse-admiral Kulakov: - MR-320 Topaz, MR-320V Topaz-V, Volga radars; + 4 x 1 Kinzhal SAM VLS (32 9M330), 1 x 6 Igla SAM (24 Igla), 5P-30N Fregat-N, 5P-30N2 Fregat-N2, 3R-95, Pal-N radars, Spektr-F laser detector

2013, Admiral Vinogradov, Severomorsk: - 1x MR-123 Vympel-A radar; + 1x MR-123-02/3 Bagira radar

2013, Admiral Levchenko: + MR-231-1 radar

2015, Admiral Levchenko: - MR-231-1 radar

2015, Admiral Vinogradov, Admiral Levchenko, Marshal Shaposhnikov, Severomorsk: + MR-231-3 radar

2016, Admiral Chabanenko: + 5P-30N Fregat-N radar

2018, Marshal Shaposhnikov: - MR-760 Fregat-MA, 2x MR-123 Vympel-A radars; + 2 x 4 Uran SSM (8 3M24), MR-710 Fregat-M, 5P-30N2 FregatN2, 2x MR-123-02/3 Bagira radars, TK-25-2 ECM suite
