Project history: These large light cruisers were enlarged versions of the prewar Chapaev (Project 68). They had the same machinery, main armament and side protection, but had much increased fuel capacity and introduced an all-welded hull and a new type of underwater protection (incuding a i: double bottom over 75 per cent of their length, and twenty-three watertight bulkheads). These ships had new fire control radars as well as new types of directors (stabilised SPN-500 for the 100mm guns). Their version of the MK-5 of the Chapaev class; the stabilised German-style 100mm/70 (SM-5-1) secondary mounts were new. The Zenit-68-bis AA fire control system could control both the secondary guns and 37mm light AA guns. The torpedo fire control system employed both optical rangefinders and a dedicated radar (Zarya). The Project 68bis design was formally approved on 27 May 1947, three month before the 68K version to which the Chapaevs were completed. The first three ships were named after Chapaevs abandoned incomplete in 1941: Sverdlov, Ordzhonikidze, Dzerzhinskiy.

On trials Sverdlov made 114000shp=32.69kts and 121700shp=33.04kts. Reportedly the rated endurance of 9000nm was 1600nm above the design figure. Reportedly, too, Sverdlov came out 370t light at 13230t standard.

The postwar ten-year plan originally called for thirty cruisers. One account of the Sverdlov claims that five were dropped in favour of the three Project 82s, but it seems more likely that the five Chapaevs counted as the first five postwar cruisers. At Stalin's death, the class was cut to twenty-one ships. After the first fifteen were laid down, the Soviet Navy ordered the remaining six (none was completed) protected against radioactive fallout as Project 68bis-ZIF. It appears that plans were soon made to convert all these ships to missile units (Protect 75). The early 1956 decision to stop construction presumably followed the October 1955 cancellation of Project 75. When work stopped, Admiral Kornilov was nearly complete, and she alone of the incomplete ships was hulked. In 1959 all the others were ordered broken up by the end of 1961.

In appearance these ships generally resembled the Chapaev, but with their hull plating carried much further aft, with an additional pair of twin 100mm mounts near the bridge, and a taller cap to their second funnels.

Ship protection: Main 100mm belt (3.3m high) protected space between end barbettes and was closed by 120mm fore and 100mm aft bulkheads, there was thin 20mm belt between citadel and ship ends. 50mm flat main deck connected with upper edge of main belt, outside citadel it was 20mm. Steering gear compartment had 100mm sides and 20mm roof. CT had 130mm sides, 100mm roof and 30mm deck, secondary CT had 10mm protection. Main turrets had 175mm faces, 65mm sides, 60mm rears and 75mm roofs. Barbettes were protected by 130mm armour. Secondary turrets had 20mm faces, sides and rears, 10mm roofs and 20mm barbettes.
