Project history: Cruiser designed taking into account experience of the Russian-Japanese war. Intended for service at battleships squadron. Riurik had strong enough artillery, developed underwater protection and a strong construction. At the same time experts marked weak vertical armour and low speed. Despite these lacks, Riurik was the most efficient and perfect cruiser of Russian Navy. Two later ships would be turbine driven, but in view of moral obsolescence of the project these plans have refused.

Ship protection: Main belt between main barbettes was 152mm thick, tapering to 76mm at lower edge. Fore end of the ship was protected by 76mm belt and aft end by 102mm one. 152mm part of belt was closed by 184mm bulkheads. Upper belt and central casemate of 120mm guns had 76mm armour, rear bulkheads of casemates were 25mm. Main gun turrets had 203mm sides and 64mm roofs, secondary ones had 152mm sides and 51mm roofs. Main gun barbettes had 203mm sides, secondary had 152. 38mm main deck was connected with lower edge of main belt by 38mm slopes, flat lower deck was 25mm, there was 25mm shelterdeck over 120mm battery. Underwater protection included 38mm longitudinal bulkhead.

Modernizations: 1916: - 4 x 1 - 47/40; + 2 x 1 - 47/40 Hotchkiss AA, 1 x 1 - 40/39 Vickers

Naval service: In February, 1915 Riurik ran ashore at Gogland (Gulf of Finland), taken nearby 2000t of water, but managed to reach base. In November, 1916 in the same area she was damaged by German mine; and this time the crew has skilfully repaired damages and has fetched the ship to Kronshtadt. In days of Civil war Riurik was laid up in May 1921 and partially disarmed.
