Project history: The Almaz KB, which had developed projects 183R and 205, began work on a new missile boat in 1970. Experience with the earlier boats showed a need for a more seaworthy hull, better gun and anti-aircraft armament, and longer-ranged and more sophisticated anti-ship missile. Apparently early studies envisaged a modified pr. 205, but in 1973 a new design, to use Moskit missile, was authorised. The new missile required a more advanced target designation system (ie, the sort of talk-back system already employed by pr. 1234). Trials of the prototype soon demonstrated that the new Iong-range missile could not be accommodated. The later 3M80 may have been developed specifically for this class.

In the interim, boats armed with Termit missiles were built both for the Soviet Navy and for export. The export version was known as project 1241RE). Some project 1241RE boats were commissioned by Soviet Navy before transfer. Also one boat  (R-26) served under Soviet flag was used for training of foreign crews.

Building of the next version of this boat, project 12418, armed with 16 Uran SSM, was started in XXI century for export.
