Project history: In 1946 TsKB-19 was assigned to develop new large and small armoured boats to replace existing Projects 1124 and 1125, using 85mm tank turrets (two on the large boat, one on the small). Each also had two coaxial armoured turrets for 12.7mm heavy machine guns, and the standard powerplant was the 600hp V-12 diesel which powered the T-34 tank (three in the large, two in the small armoured boats, for 16kts). Estimated displacements were 86t (draft 0.95m) and 53t (0.65m). Then the large boat was dropped, leaving only the Project 191, the prototype of which was built at Perm in 1946.
Further boats were built under Protect 191M. The main changes were installation of M-50 diesels and 14.5mm machine guns instead of 12.7mm. Weight was reduced to keep from increasing draft as armour was increased.
Ship protection: Citadel and turret were protected by splinter-proof armour.
Modernizations: 1970s, PSKR-300-315: - 1 x 2 - 14.5/93
Naval service: No significant events.
