Project history: Broadside iron-hulled coast defence ships with projecting bows and pronounced tumblehome, particularly in Pervenets. The engines of the two latter ships came from Russian wooden screw ships, and all three were rigged as three-masted schooners.

Ship protection: The hull was completely armoured above water except in Kreml' where the battery armour was not taken to the bow and stern.
