Project history: Small cheap battleships for Baltic intended to operate against Swedish and German contemporaries. First ship, Imperator Alexandr II, carried main guns in the barbette mount, and the second, Imperator Nikolay I, had the turret.
Ship protection: Imperator Alexandr II: Complete belt had 2.44m height and 356mm thickness (tapering to 152mm at lower edge) amidships (between main gun barbette and main mast) decreased respectively to 305mm till main gun barbette fwd and area between aft 229mm and 152mm casemates aft, 225mm till fwd TT and aft bulkhead of aft casemate. Aft part of belt had 125mm thickness, fwd part between fwd TT and stem divided to 3 approximately equal parts with 203-, 152- and 100mm thickness. Belt was covered by flat 63mm deck. 229mm guns had 76-51mm protection alongside ship and 152mm transverse bulkheads, 152mm guns had local 51mm protection. Main gun barbette had 254mm sides and 76mm crown.

Naval service: Imperator Nikolay I surrendered to Japanese in the Battle of Tsushima 28.5.1905, repaired and incorporated to Japanese navy as Iki. She was stricken in 1915 and sunk as target in October. Imperator Alexandr II was used for gunnery training from 1914 and laid up in May 1921.
