Complement

Yekaterina II, Chesma: 633

Sinop: 645

Project history: There were differences among the four ships. The design was unique with the 305mm mountings at the corners of an amidships triangular redoubt, one forward on either beam and one on the centre line aft. In Yekaterina II the 305mm were in hydraulic disappearing mountings made by Easton and Anderson. Chesma, the heaviest of the four, was reported to be somewhat deficient in stability.

Ship protection: 305mm mountings had 76 - 51mm shields of varying shape. The 152mm guns were in unarmoured positions on the main deck. The lower strake of the belt was complete and 406mm amidships with 203mm lower edge, but at actual normal draught only reached about 0.3m above lwl. The 305mm upper belt was 31m long ending in 254-292mm bulkheads. The armour deck was 57mm over the lower belt and 51mm over the upper belt and redoubt except in Ekaterina II where it was 38mm over the upper belt and absent over the redoubt.

Modernizations: 1906, Georgiy Pobedonosets: - 2 x 1 - 63/17, 10 x 1 - 37/20, 7 - 381 TT, 100 mines; + 4 x 1 - 7.6/94

1910, Sinop: - 1 x 2 - 305/27, 7 x 1 - 152/32, 8 x 5 - 47/22, 4 x 5 - 37/17, 7 - 381 TT, 100 mines; + 12 x 1 - 152/44 Canet, 2 x 1 - 47/40 Hotchkiss, 4 x 1 - 7.6/94

1911, Georgiy Pobedonosets: - 3 x 2 - 305/32

1915, Georgiy Pobedonosets: - 7 x 1 - 152/32, 4 x 1 - 47/40; + 14 x 1 - 152/44 Canet

Naval service: Sinop was fitted with a kind of bulge in 1914 for service as a barrage-breaker or 'mine-bumper', while the Georgiy Pobedonosets finally became a port guard ship. Sinop was captured 1.5.1918 at Sevastopol by German troops, re-captured 24.11.1918 by British-French troops, disarmed 19.2.1919 and 22-24.4.1919 exploded and demolished by British. She was liberated by Red Army 29.4.1919, captured by Whites 24.6.1919, recaptured 15.11.1920 by Reds but never repaired and recommissioned. Finally she was sold for BU in 1923. Georgiy Pobedonosets was captured by German troops at Sevastopol 1.5.1918, captured by British-French troops 24.11.1918, re-captured by Reds 29.4.1919 but captured by Whites 24.6.1919. 14.11.1920 she departed Sevastopol under tow and interned by French Authorities at Bizerte 29.12.1920. 29.10.1924 she was admitted by French Government as Soviet property but useless aged ship was sold in situ for BU in early 1930s.
