Project history: Similar to the Lazarev class but with two turrets and heavier armour.

Ship protection: The side armour was complete, and at designed draught extended from 1.7m above wl to 1.5m below. There was no armour deck.

Modernizations: 1874, both: - 2 x 2 - 229/17; + 2 x 1 - 279/17 obr. 1867

1870s, Admiral Chichagov: - 2 x 1 - 279/17; + 2 x 1 - 279/18 obr. 1877

1887, Admiral Chichagov; 1904, Admiral Spiridov: were reboilered with 4 cylindrical boilers

1890s, both: - 1 x 1 - 44/41; + 2 x 1 - 63/17 Baranovski, 1 x 1 - 47/40 Hotchkiss, 4 x 1 - 37/20 Hotchkiss

Naval service: No significant events.
