Project history: Built under Romanian order in Austria-Hungary, assembled from ready sections and launched at Galatz. On construction they were typical Danube monitors of "Austrian" type. They had enough strong protection and artillery arrangement in single turrets under triangular scheme: in any direction 2 guns could fire. In 1918 all were under control of Austria-Hungarian occupation troops, from late 1918 till 1920 under the control of British troops.
Ship protection: citadel consisted of 70mm belt closed by 60mm bulkheads and 45-20mm deck (70mm over boiler room)
Modernizations: 1937-1938, all: superstructure was partly cut; - 3 x 1 - 120/33, 2 x 1 - 120/8, 2 x 1 - 47/40, 2 x 1 - 6.5/115; + 3 x 1 - 120/50 Škoda-Bofors Mk4, 1 x 1 - 37/80 SK C/30, 1 x 2 - 13.2/76

Naval service:
Mihail Kogălinceanu and Lascar Catargiu 24.8.1944 were sunk by
Soviet aircraft on Danube (former at Kiliya, latter at Vilkovo). Both were
salvaged, repaired in 1953 and used as TSs till 1957; then they were laid up
into reserve and BU in 1959-1962.
Alexandru Lachovari and Ion C. Brătianu 5.9.1944 weare captured by
Soviet troops on Danube (former at Izmail, latter and Kislitsy). 30.10.1944 they
were commissioned by Soviet Navy as Mariupol and Azov. 3.7.1951
they were returned to Romania, BU in 1959-1960.
