Project history: The Bangor class fleet minesweepers Caraquet and Fort York were built in Canada in 1941 and served in the Royal Navy before being sold to Portuguese Navy in 1946 and 1950 respectively and renamed Almirante Lacerda (A525) and Comandante Almeida Carvalho (A527). Both were originally employed as survey ships, but in 1965 Carvalho was renamed Cacheu and reclassified as a corvette.
