Project history: Baptista de Andrade class utilized the same hull and machinery as the João Coutinho, but had a more sophistical armament and sensors. They had a helicopter platform but no hangar and landing aid equipment. Very poor armament and equipment dictated employment of these ships only in patrol and fisheries protection roles.

Modernizations: 1999-2003, all: - 2 x 3 - 324 TT, 1 DCR, Decca TM626, AWS-2, Pollux radars, Diodon sonar; + Decca RM316P, Kelvin-Hughes 5000 Nucleus 2 radars

Naval service: No significant events.
