Project history: Voted July 1959 under a five-year programme, with half the cost being paid by United States. Based on the German Type 207, but with a stronger hull for deeper diving, and revised equipment. They can fire the US Mk 37 and Bofors Tp 61 wire-guided torpedoes. Svenner, equipped for officer training, has a second periscope and was 1m longer.

Modernizations: 1.1989, Sklinna; 10.1989, Skolpen; 10.1990, Stord; 5.1991, Kobben; 12.1991, Kunna; 10.1993, Svenner: lengthened (469/524t (Svenner 483/538t), 47.4m oa (Svenner 48.4m oa); electronic equipment consisted of Type 1007 radar, CSU-83 sonar, AR700 ECM suite, MSI-90U CCS; submarines can fire DM-2A3 torpedoes.

Naval service: Stadt grounded in spring 1987 and was stricken beyond repair.
