Project history: On the borderline between cruiser and gunboat, but the 35mm deck places this ship as a cruiser.

Protection: Armoured thin 35mm deck protected machinery. 15cm guns were protected by 25mm shields, secondary guns were protected by 25mm casemates.

Modernizations: 1904: new armament consisted of 1 x 1 - 149/46 Armstrong CC1, 1 x 1 - 120/44 Armstrong Y, 4 x 1 - 76/40 Armstrong N, 2 x 1 - 75/37 SK L/40?, 6 x 1 - 47/40 Hotchkiss, 1 - 356 TT (bow)

Naval service: Viking was stricken in 1920 and in 1924 sold to Norwegian Red Cross for use as hospital ship.
