Project history: In 1977 Naval Material Command requested two new types of EEZ patrol vessels, three of ice-strengthened type and four of normal type. Later budget was cut and only three type 320 ships were built. Only Nordkapp is strengthened for ice navigation. Ships can able for patrol, fire-fighting, anti-pollution, meteorological duties and can serve as escorts in wartime (they can be fitted with 6 Penguin Mk 2 SSMs).

Modernizations: 1997-1998, all: - 1 x 1 - 20/90; + 1 x 2 Simbad SAM (~8 Mistral), MSI-80S CCS

2000-2002, all: - 9LV200 Mk 2, AWS-4 radars, SS105 sonar, MSI-80S CCS; + SPS-67(v)3 radar, Vigy 20 e/o system, SP270 sonar, EDO CMS CCS

2006-2008, all: - 2 x 3 - 324 Mk 32 TT, 1 Lynx helicopter, SPS-67(v)3, 9LV Mk 218 Mk 2 radars; + 1 NH90 helicopter, TRS-3D 16ES radar

Naval service: No significant events.
