Project history: Otago was ordered in February 1956 for the RN, but in February 1957 the contract was taken over by the RNZN and a second ship was ordered at the same time. Apart from internal modifications they were identical with RN ships.

Modernizations: 1967, Otago; 1969, Taranaki: - 1 x 1 - 40/60, 2 x 3 - 305 Limbo ASWRL, type 293Q radar; + 1 x 4 Sea Cat GWS22 SAM (12 Sea Cat), 2 x 1 - 20/70 Mk 7, 2 x 3 - 324 TT, type 993 radar

1979, Taranaki: - 1 x 4 Sea Cat SAM; + 1 x 1 - 40/60 Mk 9

1979, Otago: - type 277Q radar

Naval service: In 1978-79 Taranaki was converted to a training ship with a single 40mm Mk 7 on the after superstructure.
