Project history: Design of G. de Rooy: development of K XIV class, but in many respects O16 remained experimental. Among all Dutch submarines she became the champion by number of introduced innovations. From the previous classes she differed by sharply increased displacement. Double-hulled. The pressure hull was built of St.52 steel with wide application of welding: 49% of constructions were welded. O16 became the first submarine with prototype of snorkel. She was the first Dutch submarine, equipped with Atlas Werke-made sonar, capable to work in an active mode. 40mm MGs were installed in disappearing mountings.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: O16 was lost 15.12.1941 on a mine at Eastern coast of Malacca Peninsula.
