Project history: The Holland-type O1 was laid down by De Schelde of Vlissingen in June 1904 and completed in July 1906 as Luctor et Energo, a private venture using plans from the US Electric Boat Co. She was purchased for the Netherlands Navy on 20 December 1906, and was known initially as 'onderzeeboot I'.

Modernizations: 1914: petrol engine was replaced by 200hp MAN diesel

Naval service: No significant events.
