Project history: Development of Hydra class with increased dimensions and mine capacity. They can carry on the covered mine deck 87 mines of 1921 type or 108 mines of 1918 type.

Modernizations: 1941, Douwe Aukes: - 2 x 1 - 12.7/90; + 1 x 1 - 20/70 Oerlikon Mk II/IV

1942, Douwe Aukes: - 2 x 1 - 75/52; + 2 x 1 - 40/39 QF Mk VIII, 1 x 1 - 20/70 Oerlikon Mk II/IV

Naval service: Douwe Aukes and Van Meerlant were transferred to Royal Navy 29.4.1941 and 14.3.1941 respectively. Van Meerlant was lost 4.6.1941 on a mine in a mouth of Thames. Douwe Aukes was returned to the Netherlands in 1945, after war converted to minesweeper tender, stricken 1.2.1962 and sold on demolition 6.7.1962.
