Project history: The final design, prepared by Schelde and Spain's Izar (formerly E.N. Bazán), was approved in 1993, with two sisters also built in Spain. Ordered in 1994. Built to merchant marine standards but has degaussing coils and a gas-tight citadel. Ballast tanks (to flood down the docking well) accommodate 4000t of seawater. Carries 300t of potable water. Is able to operate in Sea State 6. The main diesel generator system provides both propulsion and ship's service power. Hospital facilities include two operating rooms, 100 beds, and 10 intensive-care berths.
Has a dual helicopter hangar totaling 510m² and two landing spots on the 55x16m helicopter deck. There is 1400m² of internal vehicle parking space, and the 885m² docking well can also be used for additional vehicles, further vehicles can be carried on the 1340m² helicopter deck. Has 627m³ of general stores capacity (136m³ refrigerated), 630m³ of marine equipment capacity, and 320m³ of ammunition storage. One 25t and one 2.5t capacity cranes are fitted. Is able to carry up to 30 Leopard-2 battle tanks or 160 armored personnel carriers. Two Leopard tanks have been altered to function as Beach Armored Recovery Vehicles for use with the ship, which also can carry two portable road-layers. Vehicles can be moved from belowdecks to the helicopter deck by a 25t-capacity elevator. The docking well can accommodate six LCA Mk 3 or four Dutch LCU-1 or four British LCU Mk 9 or four U.S. LCM(8) landing craft. There are three side doors per side, with the forward door usable for vehicle loading and debarking. To support ASW helicopters, the magazine accommodates 30 Mk 46 torpedoes and 300 sonobuoys.
Embarked troop Stinger shoulder-launched SAMs contribute to ship defenses.
