Project history: Ordered late 2009 as the largest ship built for Dutch naval service. Intended to support the full spectrum of naval operations, including humanitarian and disaster relief, amphibious, sealift, and underway fleet support. The ship was built in sections with the hull constructed at Galati, Romania. Sealift cargo capacity includes 730m² of ammunition storage, 1000m² of genera! storage, 8700m³ fuel, 125m³ drinking water, and 2350m² of vehicle cargo space for roll-on/roll-off vehicle cargo accessed via a 100t quarter ramp. The helicopter landing deck has two landing spots and measures 80x30m (2500m²) and can accommodate up to six NH90 helicopters with their blades folded or two Chinook-sized helicopters with blades fully spread. The hangar is 1060m². Medical facilities include two operating rooms, X-ray and MRl faculties, and extensive accommodations for medical personnel. Two LCVP (LCA) landing craft are carried in davits, and cargo can be loaded with a 40t crane or by LCUs or other landing craft via a stern mooring area. Has two underway replenishment stations. Electronics include the SMILE four-faced active phased-array search radar to provide air surveillance, helicopter control, surface surveillance, and weapon control functions. Primary sensors are housed in a single integrated mast module.
