Project history: Successful compact coast defence ships with a full-length armoured waterline belt. Unlike similar Scandinavian ships they had large dimensions that allowed to ensure the better seaworthiness and high endurance.
In 1926 Hertog Hendrik was converted to TS, the aft turret was removed and ship received 2 seaplanes, handled by lattice crane on a mainmast.
Ship protection: Armoured belt protected full ship length, 150mm-thick part between main turrets was closed by 150mm bulkheads. Main 50mm deck was connected with upper edge of the belt.
Modernizations: 1926, Hertog Hendrick: - 1 x 1 - 238/37, 4 x 1 - 75/37, 4 x 1 - 37/20; + 2 seaplanes (WA or Fairey IIID)
1940, Vliereede: + 2 x 1 - 40/56 Bofors No.4, 2 x 1 - 12.7/90
Naval service: Hertog Hendrik was scheduled to scrap in the early 1940, but in December, 1939, in connection with the Second World War beginning, for some weeks she was commissioned as floating battery named Vliereede. The exact armament structure that moment is unknown. 14.5.1940 she was captured by German troops and subsequently converted to non-self-propelled AA floating battery Ariadne. Ship was returned in 1945, converted by Wilton-Feijenoord to barrack ship and commissioned 21.10.1947 under old name Hertog Hendrik. She was disbanded 27.9.1968 and stricken 28.8.1969.
