Project history: Further development of idea of
multipurpose ship, included in Guanajuato class. At expense of some hull
increasing, introduction of extended forecastle and decreasing of armament,
capacity was raised twice, to 490 infantrymen and 80 horses with landing and
unlanding through two sideports. Number of 102mm guns was shrank to two, but two
additional 57mm guns were installed abreast funnel. Machinery structure remained
unchanged, but for preservation of 20kts speed machinery power was raised to 6500hp.
Sister-ships Durango and Zacatecas were ordered to Spanish
builders in 1932. Officially they were classified as military transports (Transporte de Guerra). Durango
was commissioned in 1936; Zacatecas outfitted in 1936, was requisitioned by
National government of Spain and in 1938 was commissioned by Franco`s fleet as Calvo Sotelo, though officially it
was issued only 30.5.1938.
