Project history: Ordered in 1964 as frigate-yacht Black Star for Ghana navy but due to political reasons transfer was refused and ship was commissioned by Royal Navy as Mermaid. In 1977 she was purchased by Malaysia as replacement for the first Hang Tuah.

Modernizations: 1996: re-motorized (2 Wärtsilä 12SW28 diesels, 10000hp, 20kts); - 1 x 2 - 102/45, 2 x 1 - 40/60, 2 x 2 - 30/75, 1 x 3 - 305 Limbo ASWRL, type 978 radar, type 170B, type 174 sonars; + 1 x 1 - 57/70 SAK-57 Mk 1, 2 x 1 - 40/70 Bofors 350, Decca 1226 radar

Naval service: No significant events.
