Project history: Type 209/1200 (KSS I). Chang Bogo was built in Germany and handed over 15.10.1992 while the next two were assembled in South Korea using components shipped from Germany. Phase II units were assembled in Korea, with a steadily increasing proportion of all-Korean materials and components, but some critical structures and all sensor and machinery equipment continued to be imported. The first three were ordered in 1988, to standard IKL type 209/1200 design; a second group of three was ordered during 1991. The third increment was ordered in 1995, but a planned fourth trio was dropped. Consideration is being given to adding an AIP (Air-Independent Propulsion) module and the ability to launch UGM-84C Harpoon antiship missiles during future refits. Are reportedly the quietest-yet Type 209 submarines, due to the use of advanced sound-damping rafting of the machinery. Have four 120-cell, 11,500amp*hr batteries weighing a total of 257 tons. Only 96 SUT torpedoes were ordered, submarines in 2000s received domestic designed Baeksangeo torpedoes.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: No significant events.
