Project history: On torpedo boats of this class errors supposed at designing of Tomozuru have been corrected: armament was moderated and changes were made to construction of superstructures. For stability raise the hull beam was increased. Displacement and draught were increased. At the expense of growth of engine power (on 72%) designed speed has raised. Armament repeated fitted on Tomozuru after reconstruction. They were ordered as numbers 5-20 under 2nd Supplementary programme of 1934, but building of eight of 16 planed ships was cancelled in favour of building of submarine chasers. No13-20 (Hatsutaka, Aotaka, Wakataka, Kumataka, Yamadori, Mizudori, Umidori and Komadori) were never ordered.
Modernizations: 1942, all: - 1 x 1 - 120/45, 1 x 1 - 40/62; + 2 x 2 - 25/60 96-shiki, 2 DCT (48 totally)
1944, all survived: + 1 x 2 - 25/60 96-shiki, 5 x 1 - 25/60 96-shiki, 3-shiki 1-go radar, standard displacement increased to 1043t.
Naval service: Kasasagi 26.9.1943 was sunk in Flores Sea by US submarine Bluefish. Otori 12.6.1944 was sunk NE off Saipan by US carrier aircraft. Hayabusa 24.9.1944 was sunk SE off Manila by US carrier aircraft. Hato 16.10.1944 was sunk SE off Hong Kong by US carrier aircraft. Sagi 8.11.1944 was sunk W off Luzon by US submarine Gunnel. Hiyodori 17.11.1944 was sunk at E Coast of Luzon by US submarine Gunnel. Kari 16.7.1945 was sunk in 220nm SW off Macassar (Celebes) by US submarine Вауа. Kiji in October, 1947 was transferred to USSR on reparation.
