Project history: The first teardrop-hull submarines produced by Japan. These boats had double hulls, a bow sonar array and torpedo tubes amidships; NS-63 high-tensile steel was used in the hull shell in order to permit greater diving depth (200m). The class was equipped with a separate emergency blowing system which enables the submarine to surface rapidly. A three-dimensional automatic steering system, consisting of a combination of automatic depth-maintenance system and automatic direction-maintenance system was installed. The ATSS (Auxiliary Training Submarines) are used for experimental trials as well as training.

Modernizations: 1989, Isoshio; 1990, Narushio; 1991, Kuroshio; 1992, Takashio; 1994, Yaeshio: as TS carried only 4 torpedoes, SQS-36(J) sonar array was removed, 60 crewmembers + 20 trainees.

Naval service: No significant events.
