Project history: Sen-Taka-Sho (Small fast submarine) type. Along with "fast" submarines of Sen-Taka type, boats of Sen-Taka-Sho type ("small fast") concerned to most perfect Japanese submarines. High submerged speed was their main feature. Under the characteristics they were comparable with German "elektro-booten" of XXIII series. At designing experience of building and service of experimental submarine No71 was used. The section method of hull forming and wide application of welding have allowed to achieve outstanding results: lead ÍÀ201 was ready in three months after laying, and for subsequent boats the assemblage cycle was defined in four-five months. It was supposed to complete 13 boats in a month. Double-hulled, with streamlined outer hull.

Under the 1943/1944 programme order for building of 79 submarines has been given out, actually 40 ships were laid, from which only 10 were completed before the capitulation. Unfinished ÍÀ206 was sunk 25.8.1945 in Kobe during a storm. HA241-245, 254-258, 267-271, ordered for Sasebo K K, HA247-249, 259-262, 272-275 (Kawasaki), HA250-253, 263-266, 276-279 (Mitsubishi) were never begun, projected Nos I-IX were never ordered.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: ÍÀ201, 202, 205, 207, 208, 210 and incomplete ÍÀ215, 217, 219 and 228 were scuttled by Americans in the beginning of April, 1946. ÍÀ230 was launched already after an end of the war for slipway release, in 1946 she was handed over on demolition. Incomplete ÍÀ211-214, 218, 221 and 229 after war, in 1946-1948 are handed over on demolition.
