Project history: Improved version of the Oyashio class; have X-configuration stern control surfaces; fitted with four Swedish-designed Stirling V4-275R Mk-II air-independent propulsion units. Later units are equipped with lithium-ion batteries instead of AIP, receiving the same submerged endurance with significant simplified but more expensive construction.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.
