Project history: Sen-Ho (Support submarine) type. Submarine replenishment tankers of Sen-Ho type were built for replenishment of large flying boats in the high sea. Each such tanker should carry up to 365t of aviation petrol, 15t of aviation ammunition (torpedoes and bombs) and 11t of fresh water. Simultaneously one submarine could supply 3 planes. Double-hulled, endurance was up to 60 days. Design provided artillery consisted from one 140mm/40 gun and 2 twin 25mm MGs, however at completion the gun was replaced by 4 mortars. Under the 1942 programme building of three submarines (I351-353) was provided, but actually navy received only lead I351. I352 at 90% availability 22.6.1945 was destroyed in Kure at of American Army aircraft. Order for I353, as well as for three more submarines of the additional 1942 program (Nos I-III), was cancelled in 1943.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: I351 was sunk 14.7.1945 NE off Natuna Besar by US submarine Bluefish.
