Project history: Schneider-Laubeuf type. Built in Kure under Schneider-Creusot drawings. She was structurally similar to French sister-ships, but differed by increased dimensions and presence of four bow torpedo tubes (they carried all torpedoes in side drop-collars). Diesels were delivered from France. No14 at the moment of her laying it is possible to consider rather perfect, but her building was delayed, and at the moment of commission she was already obsolete.
No15 was ordered in December, 1911 together with sister-ship No14, however latter after war beginning has been requisitioned and commissioned by French Navy as Armide. Building of No15 was suspended: she was handed over to customers only in July, 1917. Instead of submarine No14 Japanese have decided to build in homeland a new boat with the same number. Submarine No15 has played important role in development of the Japanese submarine fleet. She was double-hulled, possessed big stowage of fuel. By the First World War end she was unique modern submarine of IJN.
Modernizations: 1919, 14, 15-go: - 1 x 1 - 40/39; + 1 x 1 - 76/40 3-shiki.
Naval service: No significant events.
