Project history: An entirely new design, with SS590 approved under the 1993 budget. The casing above the pressure hull is much higher than in previous Japanese designs and is tapered downward at the bow to accommodate the bow-mounted torpedo tubes and chin sonar array. The outer hull has an anechoic coating on the sides, but not on the bottom. The towed hydrophone array is housed at the aft end of the casing. There are two conformal flank passive hydrophone arrays, the upper running nearly the full length of the submarine and the lower, shorter one running from just forward of the sail to roughly amidships.
