Project history: Double-hulled Oyashio was built under the 1956 programme and was the first submarine built in Japan since the Second World War. Although equipped with a snorkel, she was a very conservative design. She had a whale-shaped hull with an internal frame and her 480 main storage batteries were arranged in four groups within two rooms. The diving planes were housed inside the hull, between the internal and external frames.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.
