Project history: These boats are often cited as two distinct classes with the lead unit being segregated, since she had a different shaped bow and less sophisticated sonar. These were the first fleet submarines constructed by the Japanese since the Second World War, being double the displacement of the Hayashio and Natsushio classes, and were specially equipped to serve as 'targets' in ASW exercises. The bow TT were for US Mk 54 and the aft rubes were for 'swim out' torpedoes.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: No significant events.
