Project history: Vickers L(3) type. Built under the 1919 programme under Vickers licence and were structurally very similar to British L class submarines. Saddle-tank construction. Planned No48-50 submarines were cancelled in 1920 and replaced by order for minelaying submarines.

Modernizations: 1933-1934, all: - 1 x 1 - 76/23; + 1 x 1 - 76/40 88-shiki, fuel stowage can be increased to 117 t.

Naval service: All 3 submarines were used for training from 1941.
