Project history: Kai-Toku-Chu (Medium special Admiralty) type. Built under the 1918 programme, developed on the basis of the Schneider-Laubeuf design. Nos72-87 were cancelled under terms of Washington Treaty.

Modernizations: none

Naval service: 70-go during commissioning trials 21.8.1923 foundered in Kobe harbour as result of technical accident, salvaged in November, 1924. She was officially repaired and completed in 1927 but as fact new submarine was built.

RO30-32 were laid up 1.4.1942, till the end of war they were used as training hulks. RO31 was scuttled by Americans 5.4.1946.
