Project history: Kai-Sho (small Admiralty type). Built under 4th Supplementary programme of 1939, and also under the War programme of 1941. Intended for bases defense. Design was developed on the basis of Kaichu type boats, but Kai-Sho were smaller. 9 more submarines (Nos I-IX) it was supposed to build under the 1942 programme, but works on them have not started. Double-hulled, endurance was 21 days.
On an original design artillery included only 25mm MGs, but during completion most submarines received 76mm gun instead.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: RO102 14.5.1943 was sunk in Vitiaz Strait (New Guinea) by US MTBs ÐÒ150 and ÐÒ152. RO107 after 6.7.1943 was lost, possibly she was sunk 12.7.1943 at Kolombangara by US destroyer Taylor. RO103 was damaged 16.3.1943 off Aleutian by US submarine S32, after 28.7.1943 she was lost in Solomons area, possibly mined. RO101 was sunk 15.9.1943 E off San Cristobal by US aircraft and destroyer Saufley. RO100 was sunk 25.11.1943 in Bougainville area by US Army aircraft (under other version she was mined). RO110 was sunk 11.2.1944 at eastern coast of India by Indian sloop Jumna and Australian minesweepers Ipswich and Lauceston. RO106 was sunk 22.5.1944 NW off Kavieng by US escort destroyer England. RO104 was sunk 23.5.1944 NW off Kavieng by US escort destroyer England. RO116 was sunk 24.5.1944 NW off Kavieng by US escort destroyer England. RO108 was sunk 26.5.1944 NE off Manus by US escort destroyer England. RO105 was sunk 31.5.1944 NW off Kavieng by US escort destroyer England. RO111 was sunk 10.6.1944 NW off Kavieng by US destroyer Taylor. RO114 was sunk 17.6.1944 off Tinian (Marianas) by US destroyers Melvin and Wadleigh. RO117 was sunk 17.6.1944 SE off Saipan by US aircraft. RO115 after 22.1.1945 was lost, presumably she was sunk 31.1.1945 SW off Manila by US destroyers Jenkins, O`Bannon and Bell. RO112 was sunk 11.2.1945 off Camiguin (Philippines) by US submarine Batfish. RO113 was sunk 12.2.1945 at Babuyah (Philippines) by US submarine Batfish. RO109 after 12.4.1945 was lost, possibly she was sunk 29.4.1945 SE off Okinawa by US carrier aircraft (under other version she was sunk 25.4.1945 in Philippine Sea by US fast personnel transport Horace A. Bass).
