Project history: Kaidai 5 (Large Admiralty 5) type. Built under the 1927-1931 programme. Development of Kaidai 4 type, differed by increased diving depth and new 100mm gun. Double-hulled.
Modernizations: 4.1945, I165: - 1 x 1 - 100/50; + 2 Kaiten human torpedoes.
Naval service:
I67 was lost 29.8.1940 during fleet manoeuvres off
Bonin. I166 was sunk 17.7.1944 at Singapore by torpedo from British submarine
Telemachus. I165 was sunk 27.6.1945 E off Saipan by
US aircraft.
