Project history: Kaidai 4 (Large Admiralty 4). Built under the 1923-1928 programme. Development of Kaidai 3b type, the basic differences consisted in a little bit smaller hull length and reduction of bow TTs number from six to four for lightening of a fore end.

Modernizations: 4.1945, I162: - 1 x 1 - 120/45; + 2 Kaiten human torpedoes.

Naval service: I61 1.10.1941 was lost as a result of collision with gunboat off Iki. In February, 1942 she was raised, but repair has been recognised as inexpedient, and wreck was broken up. I64 17.5.1942 was sunk SE off Kagoshima by US submarine Triton. I162 14.2.1943 was damaged by torpedo from US submarine Thresher and was under repair till May, 1943, in July, 1944 she was re-rated as training submarine, early 1945 there is begun conversion to Kaiten carrier, submarine was scuttled by Americans 1.4.1946.
