Project history: Kaidai 3 (later Kaidai 3a, Large Admiralty 3a) type. Built under the 1923-1928 programme. Further development of Kaidai 2 type: displacement was increased on 300t at simultaneous decrease in a buoyancy for diving time reduction; hull and CT lines were a little changed. Double-hulled.
Modernizations: 4.1945, I158: - 1 x 1 - 120/45; + 2 Kaiten human torpedoes.
Naval service: In March-July, 1942 all were re-rated as training submarines. First two were laid up in January, 1944, and I155 in July, 1945.
I153, I154 and I155 after war were broken up and I158 was scuttled by Americans 1.4.1946.
