Project history: Kaichu 5 (Medium Admiralty 5) type. Built under 1st Supplementary programme of 1931. Design was based on construction of Kai-Toku-Chu type submarines, but had more powerful diesels and improved hull form. Double-hulled, endurance was about 30 days.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: RO33 was sunk 29.8.1942 at Port Moresby by Australian destroyer Arunta. RO34 5.4.1943 was sunk off Russell Island (Solomons) by US destroyers O`Bannon and Strong.
