Project history: Junsen 3 (Cruiser submarine 3) type. Built under 2nd Supplementary programme of 1934. Though these ships concerned to cruiser Junsen type, for a basis at their designing were fleet submarines of Kaidai 6 type were taken. Aviation armament was similar to used on Junsen 1M and Junsen 2 types. Double-hulled. CT and free board were protected by light armour. Endurance was about 60 days.

Modernizations: 1942, both: - 1 x 1 - 13.2/76; + 1 x 2 - 25/60 96-shiki, 1 x 2 - 13.2/76.

early 1945, I8: - 1 catapult with hangar and seaplane; + 2 x 2 - 25/60 96-shiki, 4 Kaiten human torpedoes, presumably 2-shiki 2-go radar

Naval service: I7 22.6.1943 was damaged by gunfire of US destroyer Monaghan, run ashore at Kiska (Aleuts) and was blown up by crew and abandoned. I8 was sunk 31.3.1945 SE off Okinawa by gunfire of US destroyers Morrison and Stockton.
