Project history:  First submarine was gifted to Japanese Emperor, second was built for Japanese Navy. Former of them arrived from Germany to Japan in May-August, 1943 with German crew. Latter undertook similar voyage already with Japanese crew.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: RO501 was sunk en route to Japan 13.5.1944 off Azores by US escort destroyer Francis M. Robinson.
