Project history: Constructed under the 1959 programme, these boats and their near-sisters, the Natsushio class, were small and limited in capability. They were air-conditioned and had good habitability and a large safety factor. They were modelled after the US Barracuda and were somewhat shorter and thicker than Oyashio. In order to reduce hull resistance, an effort was made to produce a perfect a perfect double hull, external framing was used in order to improve internal space. Attention was paid to improving underwater manoeuvrability, and a 'jostick' was installed for steering. The class used a water pressure system for launching torpedoes, thus eliminating the emission of air bubbles. The main storage batteries were water-cooled.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: No significant events.
