Project history: A natural progression from the previous Yushio class with improved noise reduction and ZQR-1 towed array sonar. Can fire Sub-Harpoon from the torpedo tubes.

Modernizations: 2000, Asashio; 2008, Hayashio; 2011, Fuyushio: as TS carried only 4 torpedoes, ZQR-1 sonar array was removed, 60 crewmembers + 20 trainees.

12.2001, Asashio: lengthened (87.0m oa, 2900/3700t), AIP with 2 88kW Stirling V4-275R Mk II engines was installed

Naval service: No significant events.
