Project history: Tei-Gata D1 type. Specialised submarines intended for transportation of various cargoes. It was originally supposed to use them for supply of ships in far areas and fulfilment of subversive operations. Already during building they were reoriented for the supply of island garrisons. Ships were classified as "model D" (Tei-Gata).

Under the additional 1942 programme 12 boats of this type were built, under the 1943/1944 programme it was provided to build 92 more boats (Nos I-XCII), but works on them did not start.

Submarines can carry 62.5t of cargo in a pressure hull, additional 20t could take places on a deck. Besides, there were premises for transportation of 110 persons of landing party. In aft part of a deck two Daihatsu class landing crafts (sustained diving at 60m) were fastened. Two bow TTs for self-defence were supposed, however on trials of lead I361 it was found out, that they caused strengthened wavemaking, unmasking submarine, and they have refused. After trials TTs were removed from I361 too. Double-hulled, endurance was 60 days.

Modernizations: mid-1944, I361: - 2 - 533 TT

spring 1945, I361, 363, 366 - 370, 372: - 1 x 1 - 140/40, landing craft and deck cargo; + 5 Kaiten human torpedoes

1945, some survived: + 3-shiki 1-go radar

I362 was sunk 13.1.1945 N off Truk by US escort destroyer Fleming. I371 after 31.1.1945 was lost, possibly sunk off Kure 24.2.1945 by US submarine Lagarto. I370 was sunk 26.2.1945 at Iwojima by US escort destroyer Finnegan. I368 was sunk 27.2.1945 at Iwojima by US carrier aircraft (Anzio air group). I361 was sunk 30.5.1945 SE off Okinawa by US carrier aircraft (Anzio air group). I372 was sunk 28.7.1945 at Yokosuka by US carrier aircraft.
