Project history: After capitulation of Germany all being in Japan German submarines 8-10.5.1945 were transferred under Japanese control and after assimilation of ships by new crews entered service. 15.7.1945 they have replaced old, still German numbering on accepted in the IJN. It is interesting, that two of these submarines, former Italian Comandante Cappellini and Luigi Torelli, already were once captured by Japanese 10.9.1943, after capitulation of Italy. Both boats then have transferred to Germany for usage as transports.

Naval service: I503 was scuttled by Americans 5.4.1946.
